鍋爐給水由補充水和冷凝蒸汽組成。對於補充水，許多工廠利用原水，需要用澄清劑，砂濾器和混合介質過濾器的組合進行預處理。預處理水接著藉由反滲透膜，脫礦質劑，電極離子發生器，超過濾或其他系統進行進一步處理。最終的低電導率超純水提供最佳鍋爐效能所需的水準。
使用純淨的冷凝水代替補充水可減少化學品和能源的用量，進而為廠區提供巨大的價值。然而，冷凝物不可避免地會涉及如冷凝器洩漏而導致蒸汽循環污染的風險。不良冷凝物回到鍋爐可能會導致傳熱效率降低，增加排污量，以及相關的水﹑能源和化學品成本。監測冷凝水可能及早發現冷凝器洩漏，並提供鍋爐水處理效能的總括資訊。
無論水源為何，如果不經處理，水處理中的問題將會在整個蒸汽循環中散播。處理原水或冷凝水設備之維護和故障排除是循環過程中的關鍵步驟。
